FINAL- Bull head (MAIN image for poster)

Here is the final design for the bulls head. i have decided to not use opposite colours on the design and made the fans and the wine bottles the same colour. i have included tear drops and spider webs which resembles death on the day of the dead skulls. i have used flowers for the eyes on the design as this is a traditional way eyes are represented o the skulls. the eyes have been coloured read this makes them stand out more and becomes the central attention of the image.

DEVELOPMENT- Experimenting colour work

Here are some colour developments and ideas for the bull head i have experiment with how i can create the head by using only, red, yellow white and a pastel gold colour. this is so the image is created using a very Spanish colour pallet. i have also experimented with different colours in which i can use on the background. i tried using very contrasting colours such as blue and purple. however these were not very successful as they made the image lose impact began interfering with the image to much. i also tried black. i thought that black was too extreme and made the image look like it has been placed on a black background for no appropriate reason.

i have experimented with the colour on the image, i have tried to select opposites in colour. for example on ear has red wine on it and the other has white wine. and also i have included a red and white fan opposites on top of the head.

i have tried to make the background colour work by seeing if a dividing white line would make it more consistent. however i think this would loose the shape of the bulls head and make it harder to notice the subtle imagery within the design.

the blue used makes the design look a bit light hearted and loses impact it also looks like its been chosen randomly.

DEVELOPMENT- quick colour experimenting/ pen work

i have decided to create the artwork in sections so that i will be able to scan in the bits and peace them together on photoshop. this will be easier if i need to make slight adjustments to the image in photoshop.

here are some quick colour variations which i have tried out, i produced these by live tracing one of my design sheets and then colouring them on phtoshop. i have produced these so i can have a rough idea what the finished piece will look like, this was also helpful as it gave me a chance to experiment with the colours before i created the final illustration which is fairly time consuming.

DON'T PANIC- Love Spain Hate Bullfighting

Here are some concept designs for the artwork which i will use on the poster.
for the design i will combine typography/ and imagery relating to Spain and bullfighting. i will link them all together to create a day of the dead style for the design. i will create the over all shape as a bulls head, Rather than a skull.

the day of the dead is a Spanish/ Mexican holiday which celebrates the dead. this is a reference to celebrate all the cruelty brought upon bulls in bullfighting. the style will also fit in with the street art theme and have an overall Spanish feel.

here are some layout ideas for how i might produce the poster after i have created the artwork design for the poster.

HEADLINE FINAL- digital submission

Here are the final digital submissions for the competition
Here are the final two colour variations for the final design, for the screen print. i have shown an example of a print which will be purple, magenta and silver. the other variation shows a purple, magenta and cyan. this would be a to colour print as when cyan and magenta overlay they will make purple.

i have also developed the words 'balls' to be in the shape of a circle. this is more consistent and works more with the rest of the words, i also tried variations with using the halftone effect over the word. however this contrasted to much with the other words which have the same effect on them.

DEVELOPMENT for final design

i have developed the final design, which i have chosen. because the original looked a bit to flat, i decided to add some detail to bring more appeal to the print, however i didn't want to over complicate the design so i have added a wood effect to the 'Woods'.

i added a flag to the words 'Plays' i have done this by using the letter form of 'P', which allowed me to subtly include the shape of a golf flag without over completing the deign and still keeping the headline readable.

i have added another halftone effect to the 'Nike'and 'Says' this will help separate them from the rest of the print and draw the audiences attention to the top of the print.

DEVELOPMENT- no outlines

Here are some experiments with the selected colour ways i have also removed the outlines form the words. i did this so the print looks like it has more space in-between the words, therefore flow and read better. which limits the amount of detail in the print, i also thought that the line used was unnecessary as it highlighted the words which were already readable therefore didn't need to be present.

losing the outline flattens the print more and makes it look more consistent.

EXPERIMENTING-colour

Here are some colour variations for the selected layout of the screen print.

i have again limited the colour use above, so that the colours used are cyan, purple, magenta (black)-paper (white). i have chosen these colours as they reassemble an 80's retro style of Nike. even though this doesn't reference any golf colours, it does take the headline and make it contemporary so that it will appeal to the people which shop in Urban Outfitters. rather than using colour to make reference to the words, i will illustrate the words so that they will speak for them self's

Here i have used a more limited colour pallet, however the image is beginning to look a bit dark and doesn't really fit the style of what would appeal to the target market.

Here i have experimented with different colours for the backgrounds however they seem to interfere with the type too much. and is becoming over crowded.

Here i have looked at how i will be able to use CMYK to create the colours green purple and orange as well. this will then be a seven colour print. black will be the last colour and also create a black background to marry all the colours together and make them stand out.
i have allocated the appropriate colours to the words for example;
Orange: Nike/Tiger
Green: Plays

DEVELOPMENT- pen work

i have decided to use images of Golf balls in the word 'WOODS' rather than using the two 'o's i think this will break up the image more, while making a strong reference to the subject of the headline, it will also be a good Central part of the print. this could help draw the audiences attention. i have experimented with different halftone effects to see which version of the Golf balls would be the most effective to use on my print. i have decided to use halftone as it still keeps the look of the image and makes a vector which can be used with one colour. therefore not over complecate the print process and not interfere to much with the rest of the image.

DEVELOPMENT- single words

i have desided to make each word look like or make some form of subtle refference to its meaning. this will create consistancey in the final image and will make it feel more considered.
NIKE-i have used the nike typeface and incorparted a nike tick in the the form of mouth so it refferences that nike is saying something.
SAYS-for says i have incorporated it in to a tounge which cones out of the 'E' face which is at the end of the word Nike.
TIGER- i have made look like a tigers skin with strips
WOODS- i have illustrated to look like bits of wood nailed togther and included wood grain so it standed out.
PLAYS-OWN-are wavey very different to the rest of the words which suggests thats Tiger Woods plays a high standard of golf 'plays on game'
WITH-i have linked 'with' in with the word plays by making it look like a TEE which makes another refference to golf.
BALLS- needs developing...

DEVELOPMENT-Nike says tiger woods...

I have decided to go for the Headline: 'Nike says Tiger Woods Plays with Own Balls'. i have decided to use this headline, as it will give me a better chance to use illustrative type and combine it with imagery through the words in the headline.

Different ways in which i can use type and image in a illustrative way to create an image for the headline.

above is a combination of words with an image of Tiger Wood. however it doesn't really make any use of the words in terms of illustration, it also looks like a pretty obvious answer to the brief. there isn't really any subtle or clever references made.

here is another layout ideas, this has more potential as it is more clearer to read and gives me more space to use subtlety and references by using an illustrative style which will combine type and image.
